Marston never think that his death is still NO guarantee that his family would survive? And that FBI would not hunt Abigail and Jack down just for the heck of it? If I were Marston, I'd say I only believe in myself now, that the FBI too has screwed me up, I can't trust them to not go after my family, this is why I must live and protect them.

Re: Whoever wrote the ending to Red Dead Redemption is one dumb cowpoke

Totally agree. Look, the FBI's action in the end to kill off Marston just did not make any sense. By now everyone all over the game knows that Marston's working for FBI because he's been promised pardon. Marston was an example for outlaws everywhere, that "it's better to work for the government if you have the chance". Marston's story could have been a tale to convince outlaws everywhere else to be more trusting to FBI's promises. But in the end, the FBI showed that they themselves dishonor their own promises. Worse? They let Abigail and Jack get away so they could tell the tale to Marston's friends. Opposition to FBI would become worse, only making their job more difficult as from here on out all other outlaws would regard any FBI promises as bullshit, citing Marston as example.
Further, how would the FBI justify losing 40-50 more FBI lives in trying to kill off just one Marston? Someone they could have either left alone? Or quietly assassinate if they want to (they could just blame any other outlaws). It seems that the FBI dude just totally screwed up here.
Going back to Marston again, by the time of that barn siege, Marston would have known that the FBI's promises are BS, and that no way he could trust his family's survival to their mercy, Marston would feel extreme anger and drive to stay alive and protect his family. Him just walking off to certain death? That's just poor writing.

Ok, so perhaps Marston himself feels too tired out and frustrated, and in the end he gets suicidal. But that only makes him pathetic. Why could not Rockstar allow a branching out here: give 2 alternate choices: Either Marston gets mentally defeated and thus walks off to his death , or Marston (just like players) would feel righteously angry and vow to escape and/or take revenge?

My Marston would choose the second. Why Rockstar forces me to go with "i want to die" path?

Seems to me Rockstar just really want to make happen a "going down in a blaze of glory" scene, force fitting it, regardless of whether this is what players want or not.

Re: Whoever wrote the ending to Red Dead Redemption is one dumb cowpoke

Bill Williamson didn't make it because of Marston. Can you detect transgender people on the street? Can you look at a person and say, "hey, this person was declared female at birth, but underwent surgery and now identifies as male!"? No, I didn't think so. So how would you know how many transgender people spend their time playing video games? You wouldn't, unless you asked the entire transgender population if they play video games. Get to it.

"they can still get jobs"

Please go and google something along the lines of "lost job because of gender". No one loses their job or gets denied employment exclusively because they were declared male at birth and still identify as male, do they?

"But what you people want, is their SEXUAL PREFERENCE to be acknowledged"

We want our sexual preferences and how we identify, gender-wise, to be just as represented in media as heterosexuals and males/females. We want to be accepted just as you are, we want people to be just as educated on this as they are heterosexuality. We don't want people thinking that their feelings are invalid, whether they be "I don't think I'm a girl" or "I think I like boys and girls".

I think I'm done here. //ollies outie

Re: The 5 worst things from Mass Effect 2

ME's characters were simple and kinda boring, but the scope of the game made them feel better than they were. It didn't matter if Kaidan was boring, you'd accept him as part of a greater story and that's it. He was a boring crew-member when the game wasn't about the crew but about other, greater stuff. What about Jacob and Miranda in ME2? Those characters were just as shitty as Kaidan but they put them in a game that was ALL about the crew. If you perceive those characters any better than a Kaidan or Liara it's because they merged seamlessly in ME2's plot.

ME2 focused (almost entirely) on character interaction in its RPG elements but the world was so cramped that it set a limit on the characters and even the best interactions (namely, Tali's loyalty mission) left me with a bitter "yeah that was cool... now what? This isn't advancing the plot at all. Oh yeah, the game says something will happen in the future, big deal." when all the fuzzy feels were gone. The plot was riddled with holes and, the missions, the plot itself, the collectors were really shallow ideas... and sometimes the characters themselves were shallow (Zaeed, Jacob, Miranda and Thane are horrible characters. You're selling me an RPG game which is supposedly big on character interaction, and you put Miranda in it? What the-).

There's lots of stuff in the game that worked like this, cool ideas that fell flat or were flattened in production. I'm sure the actual world-building and script work that was made for the game was somewhat good, but whatever that was has been boiled down to your standard action flick plot. You spend the entire game recruiting people for a "suicide mission" and doing personal favors to your crew when the clock is ticking against the entire galaxy?! That's a DUMB plot man, and when it's a dumb plot the characters inevitably participate to the dumb and therefore become dumb.

Yes ME2's characters were more entertaining - that's all I can say because 'cept for a few exceptions they were in no way better developed that the characters in ME. Characters that showed depth in ME2 had already been painted in broad strokes in ME and you were acquainted to 'em. I'm pretty sure that if all the characters were designed in ME2, without the backstory and the player's personal experience with the characters, they would have fallen flat like the rest.

Re: Dark Souls – the Hollowed Killer of Lordran

Man i just found this now and it really is completely engrossing. I actually just finished the game myself and while I didn't kill everyone before finishing, hardly anyone seems to survive. So many gone hollow, I remember going down to the New Londo Ruins and seeing the NPC, I dont think he ever said his name, that I met when I first arrived in Lordran, right in front of me, hollow and aggressive, i felt kinda sad. By the end of the game the large group of people that inhabited firelink shrine began to dwindle and by the time i entered the kiln of the first flame, most had met their demise.

I did manage to save Solaire, but I didn't expect that twist from the end of Seigmeyer's quest. I expected to come across that bonfire on beach, to see them both sitting by the bonfire discussing, one final conversation from both and then a final farewell. The reality was one of the more profound moments of sadness throughout my adventure, way more than losing any accumulated souls in a moment of recklessness. I really did come to like seigmeyer's bumbling personality, no challenge ever seemed to great for him.

In the end, fighting Gwyn, I had Solaire beside me for the final battle, equipped in Havel's Armor, dual wielding the dragon greatsword, wolf ring equipped, I could not fall. After that I linked the fire, and now I am right back at the beginning, sitting at firelink shrine, preparing to do it all again.

Re: The challenge of the virtual value code

Keep it coming, great article, great website..

Re: 10 terrible things from Mass Effect 2: the awful characters

I usually don't argue with people over topics like this because nearly all the time its just someone thinking their opinion is so superior to everyone else's that they feel the need to write it down so everyone can see how intelligent they are, but this whole 'top 10' is based off blatant errors about the series and it just makes the writer look extremely pretentious. Also, number 10 on the list, the one about mordins character just gives off a vibe that makes it feel like the writer is just insecure about who he is as a person in the real world.

Re: Campfire: Invading the Valley of Defilement in Demon’s Souls

This was fantastic.
